Kingsbarns Golf Links

Courses

Located near the hallowed ground of St. Andrews, Kingsbarns Golf Links is a modern but very authentic take on Scottish links style golf.  The land itself has more undulation and elevation change than most historical links course and is atypically (at least in my mind) peppered with trees.  To me, it feels like there’s a slight bit of parkland influence but somehow still feels very authentically “linksy”.

Designed by Kyle Phillips, Kingsbarns is probably the preeminent course of a very respectful list of work.  The course opened in 2000 and has been a host of the European Tour’s Dunhill Links Championship alongside St. Andrews and Carnoustie since 2001.  In addition to the Dunhill Links, Kingsbarns has also played host to the Women’s British Open in 2017.  So what I’m saying is though this bad boy is the new kid on the block, this course is for real!

The course, which has plenty of highlights, left a few lasting memories with me that are impossible to shake.

Coastal Views

Blessed with stunning natural beauty, Kingsbarns does a great job of running holes along the coast line to give you breathtaking views all day!

My inadequate words don't do this sight justice

Epic Back Nine Par 3s

The back nine, while strong throughout, has two epic par 3s.  One short and one long, the par 3s on the back thoroughly test your game.  The 13th hole, named Cliffs, starts from an elevated tee box and is a mere chip shot at 148 yards from the tips.  Be careful though as the wind gusts from the elevated tee and you’re shooting at a pretty small green.

The second par 3 on the back is probably the most picturesque hole on the course.  Located on the ocean with beautiful jagged rocks and a scary forced carry, this hole is an exhilarating tour de force.

The Short Par 4 Sixth

What’s better than a knee-knocking, nerve wracking short par 3?  A knee-knocking, nerve-wracking short par 4!  Well, this one may not be the most nerve wracking hole but its a ton of fun.  The hole plays significantly shorter than the card lists it if you can hit the forced carry as there’s a chute that propels you down towards the green.  The sight of watching your ball hit that chute and jet towards the green is about as fun as golf gets.

Look, Kingsbarns is a premier golfing destination. It doesn't have the history of its Scottish brethren but it is 100% pure. It's pretty accessible for international visitors so do yourself a favor and don't miss it on your trip to St. Andrews.

Beau Scroggins

Beau is a highly regarded mid-amateur golfer. Some say he's the best golfer that lives between 45th and 47th Avenues in San Francisco. He has twice made the cut in the San Francisco City Championship and routinely halves matches against his friends. He's played golf on three continents and finally made a hole in one.
